Throwback Thursday with Upper: The Nostalgic Power of Music.

Okay, so there must be some sort of science responsible for why some songs transport us right back to past moments like high school days, uni days, lit hangouts we’ve had years back and other warm memories; even bad moments and memories. There are some particular songs that can never go extinct because of the kind of vibe they carry. These songs come on and you immediately travel back to the good old days, you think about when the song actually dropped, you think about how it was playing in every corner in town, how it was the vibe of every party.  No matter how sophisticated your music taste have become and evolved over the years, the opening sound of some old songs still has the power to automatically take you back in time; you can’t fight it. You suddenly find yourself thinking about how beautiful and smooth life was 10 years ago, and then you think about the artiste; you wonder what they’ve been up to and why they haven’t been around so much anymore.

.

I bet you’re confirming this feeling as valid somewhere in your mind right now, yes it happens to everyone and this is because music makes people incredibly nostalgic. Fun fact is scientists have confirmed a phenomenon called Neuroimaging; it is a phenomenon that shows that songs stimulate different areas of the brain, and give us a big shot of dopamine while they are at it. Listening to music lights up the brain’s visual cortex; this means, whenever you hear a song, you associate it with memories almost immediately. You should definitely read more about that.

In a bid to taking a trip down memory lane today, we’re looking at Nigerian musician and producer, Maleek Berry and one of our favorite projects from him Last Daze Of Summer”.  Maleek Shoyebi, popularly known as Maleek Berry , is a British-Nigerian record producer and recording artist. He has worked with prominent artists such as Wizkid, Davido, Wale, Fuse ODG, Rundown, Wande Coal and the likes.

.

Maleek Berry released his second EP First Daze of Winter in 2018. The EP contains 6 sensational songs which had so many people choosing Been Calling, Sisi Maria and Pon My Mind as their favorite tracks off the project. The First Daze Of Winter EP is a follow-up to his first EP Last Daze Of Summer which was released a year earlier. Last Daze of Summer EP gave us bubbly and colorful vibes while First Daze of Winter gave off a different vibe; moodier and warmer sort of.

.

For our nostalgic Thursday, we’ll be focusing on the Last Daze Of Summer EP. The EP contains 6 tracks; Kontrol, Let Me Know, Nuh Let Go, Lost In The World, Flexin and Eko Miami. The EP gave off a really groovy vibe. From the opening song Kontrol down to the closing song Eko Miami which is a song about a party taking over continents . I honestly think the theme for the EP should be Life Of The Party; oozing sunny vibes and beach day vibes throughout. Only digression from the actual direction of the EP was on track 4; Lost In The World, where he was a little more sober and of course this made the next track Flexin extremely apt and accurate.

Maleek Berry made an EP with such wonderful dance beats. The one that makes you want to vibe instantly and party hard. Even in big 2022, these songs come up anywhere and you see people vibing and singing along with wild smiles. Memorable!

.

Looks like we might be getting beautiful music soon again from Maleek Berry , judging from a tweet he made on 20 March, 2022 “This is the best music I’ve ever created. This year is going to change everything again”. It had me wondering, something hotter that the Last Daze Of Summer EP? Get me lit! I know everyone is probably waiting to see and hear what’s coming. It’s a beautiful day to listen to the Last Daze Of Summer EP again.
