Wizkid’s More Love Less Ego: A first listen review.
Laying down, earphones plugged in, Wizkid’s More Love Less Ego is the dish on the musical menu. The Popular singer’s last body of work Made In Lagos was a triumphant oeuvre that soundproofed his status as an Afrobeats royalty. The project took an iconic turn, with its lead single, ‘Essence’ causing a global frenzy and rewarding every creative on the project with a new level of “Stardomhood”.
Now, moving past “Made In Lagos”, the Nigerian star after loudly alerting the world about his roots, is now in a bid to show that Love is his forte. More Love, Less Ego, is Wizkid’s fifth studio album, and here is an honest dive-in about the project.
The body of work starts off with Money&Love, What you first feel from this song is the Percussive rhythm which sways in gracefully as Wizkid utters an introductory line to set the tone. Give or take, the record isn’t particularly underwhelming albeit lagging in a wow factor.
The Saxophonic championed ‘Balance’ momentarily revives the mood as Wizkid glides over Kel P-produced sonic sweetness.
Guest Star, Ayra Starr ignites on 2 Sugar as she assists Big Wiz with her effortless delivery and catchy chorus. Wizkid’s verse is mellow and reflective of the direction he aims for the song.
Everyday encompasses flare. The beats, the lyrics, the intentional and precise adlibs. It is a good one.
Slip N slide is Dancehall goodness and Wizkid is no Stranger to this genre. Notably, Something about this song doesn’t really show his presence, almost feels like the song isn’t his. Skillibeng and Shenseea are both brilliant in this song.
‘Deep’ is a lazy attempt. It’s another recycled and overused Wizkid vibe, There is nothing here.
Flower pads, The production of the song is evident and intentional, it gives a certain crescendo. The undertone/layered sound you hear while listening with earphones makes it nice.
Skepta and Naira Marley appear on ‘Wow’. The collaboration is a breeze of fresh air to the project, who would have thought we would be re-introduced to 2019’s version of Naira Marley?
On the first listen of the Thirteen track project, Wizkid delivers a decent album with much kudos to the musical production. But I strongly believe this is an average album, albeit calm and quite enjoyable. This slightly above mediocre effort can’t top his recent work, It just feels sleazy, repetitive, and with few standout songs. With all due respect, Wizkid should take a break and refill his creative juice.
