This week, we shine a light on a very talented artist. who I just discovered her sound; and I’m loving it.
Of Nigerian descent, born and raised in Vienna, Austria on the 26th of May, 1994. Meet singer, songwriter, and recording artist, Rose May Alaba. Asides being a recording artist, she is also the biological sister to Real Madrid and Austria international football star, David Alaba. Rose May is the daughter of George Alaba, a recording artist and disc jockey, known by the stage name Inferno. He was part of the pop dance duo, TWO IN ONE.
Rose May’s quest into music started at the age of 6. When her parents discovered her interest in music. She was enrolled in piano lessons at the age of 8, and she later learned how to play the guitar herself through YouTube tutorials.
In 2011, she became a member of the girl group, BFF. The Girl group was put together in the casting show, ‘Popstar- Mission Austria‘ and later broke up in 2013. She later went on to complete a three-year course at the film academy in Vienna.
Rose May’s debut single, all of this is you was released in 2015; which peaked at number 16 on the Austria singles top 40 chart. The following year, she released her sophomore single, Love Me Right produced by Rodney Hunter. This single gained a lot of accolades as it peaked at number 1 on the Austrian iTunes chart for over 4 weeks earning her an appearance at the Amadeus Austrian music award.
Rose May has gotten a lot of recognition and appreciation. She was one of the artists who penned down the 2017 special Olympic Winter Games theme song “Can you feel it” which she got to perform at the opening ceremony which was held in Vienna, Austria. In the latter part of 2017, she began to work on her project and worked with German songwriter Menno Reyntjes; together they wrote the song take your time, produced by Boris Fleck.
She paid a visit to Nigeria in 2017 and decided to tap into her roots. She found love in Afro beats, which led to her releasing another single, “My love(sabi o)” which infuses pop and Afro beats. The song gained a lot of airplay on Nigerian radio stations. She further went on to work with the self proclaimed mayor of Lagos, Mayorkun on her single, 50/50. Rose May has put out other songs like go down low, crazy, Oshey, and her EP “My first ep” in 2021.
Her first single of the year, Ibadi (waist) was released on the 17th of April and produced by Nigerian top producer, Blaise Beatz. This song is beginning to make its way in Nigeria, as videos have been circulating Twitter of Rose May vibing to her song. Recently, she claims she wished to know how to speak Yoruba fluently.
