It was in March that the fluid octaves of Morravey first permeated many cochleae. Before then, only a handful of listeners had heard of the gifted Port Harcourt-born singer whose remarkable
and compelling tik tok cover of a Fireboy Dml song had piqued the curiosity of Afrobeats veteran, Davido.
Morravey’s part in ‘In The Garden‘ one of the songs included in Davido’s fourth studio album, ‘Timeless’ had undeniably showcased her raw and promising skill.
Notably, the fast-rising singer’s input in the well-acclaimed project was deemed a strategic move in a grand scheme that involved the unveiling of a new chapter in which Morravey and another
singer, Logos Olori were named as the newest signees of Davido’s rebranded label: DMW 2.0.
However, following the several months since the nineteen-year-old songbird was unveiled, her identity and strength as a solo artist remained incognito to the pollinating eyes and ears of
music aficionados, many of whom were highly expectant upon getting a glimpse of her potential.
In this interview, over a scheduled virtual interaction that portrays one of the many perks of modern-day technology, Morravey talks to Sijibomi Anifowose of the Upper entertainment about the reasons why her teeming fans and the consuming public at large haven’t heard much of her since her signing, and why that is about to change.
How it all started
As far back as Morravey could remember, growing up in a Christian Nigerian home was delightful. For most of her childhood, she enjoyed immense care and support and whenever the need for a guiding arm arose, there was always a shoulder from her loved ones to lean on.
” I grew up in a peaceful, Christian Nigerian home that had most of the usual stereotypes. My parents’ dream for me was to become a Doctor. So, I went to the university to study medicine despite my musical ambitions. But it got to a point where I had had enough. I had to choose for myself what I wanted to make out of my life and not just follow a laid-out plan. So, I took matters into my own hands and summoned the courage to tell my parents that I was going to do music and I needed their guidance and blessing.”
Morravey’s first experience with music wasn’t the quintessential one that involved the early beginnings of singing in religious choral groups. The singer recalls that she never quite fitted in
as a chorister but found sobriety by mimicking the works of stars such as Drake, Justin Bieber, Sia, Ella Mai, Nicki Minaj, and Beyonce way before she began writing songs of her own.
“My first real experience with music wasn’t the cliche Choir routine, even though I joined the choir briefly but had decided it wasn’t for me after a short while. I think my most memorable experience with music had to be mimicking songs that I liked and enjoyed
when I was much younger. I did this up to the point that I grew confident with my tone and singing ability. Later, I began writing songs.”
The 2.0 Miracle
The singer prides herself as a go-getter, and one of her most cherished goals is working with the ultra-famous American rapper, Nicki Minaj. “I hope to get on a record with Nicki Minaj someday. She is my idol. I enjoy and resonate with her works. The way she embodies an effeminate theme is very empowering and it would be a dream come true if we were to work on a song together. To me, this is very much a possibility because I believe in myself a lot.”
Furthermore, Morravey emphatically illustrates how a supernatural turn of events had gotten her to this present apotheosis as a Davido signee- a dream come true for most up-and-rising singers who live in Nigeria.
Through a TikTok post made by a friend of Morravey’s, she had caught Davido’s attention. In the post, she sonorously sang to a cover of Fireboy Dml and Asake’s hit single ‘Bandana’ while her
friend simultaneously strummed his acoustic guitar. Initially, Morravey had deemed the cover not good enough for posting, but her friend had a different foresight, and the rest, as they say, is
history.
She says the journey leading to her being a signed artist to Davido’s DMW 2.0 is nothing short of a miracle. The singer vividly recalls how she had fervently prayed, surrendering her musical dreams, and aspirations to a higher power only a year previous to her discovery.
Morravey further went on to divulge that she had manifested her big breakthrough , admitting that she sometimes struggles to believe that her musical dreams are fast becoming a reality. The singer had always been a big dreamer, but even she was left in awe at how things eventually turned out for her.
The calm before the storm
As a newly minted music act, it is quite common to be flooded with expectations to perform almost right away, especially if there had been a plethora of buzz surrounding such an artist’s unveiling. After a while, If such an artist should tarry in releasing works, there is a possibility of a dead-end in which there is a loss of momentum.
However, in Morravey’s case, the delay is intentional. Having joined the label with little to no real-time music industry experience, Morravey says she had to undergo the necessary stages to
be fully prepared for the work ahead and not just the glitz and glamor bit.

‘ I have been working hard since I joined the label. There have been so many variables to my artistic improvement. For instance, my stage performance is better, my songwriting, delivery, and all that. I have been taking my time to enhance my prowess as a musician. This is why I can’t wait for my fans to listen to my debut body of work, which is coming sooner than expected.
